Writing a Rhetorical Analysis of a Print Ad

The second essay assignment in my English 1001 class was to write a rhetorical analysis of a print ad, left to our choice.

The ad I chose to write about was a Neutrogena ad for makeup removing towlettes.

It’s hard to write a five page paper about an ad that barely has five sentences, but because I am involved in Marketing and Advertising it was a lot easier for me to analyze what Neutrogena was doing to appeal to their customers.

When editing my first draft, I really focused on making sure the structure of my essay was cohesive, since I already had a very clear (but somewhat lengthy) thesis.

I also focused on making sure that each paragraph of my essay had a point, an explanation, and an example. This was a very helpful exercise we did in class.

My conclusion reinforced my thesis, but needed some structural help:

All of this was fixed in the final version of my essay:

Writing about Social Media in Modern Marketing

My first paper for my English 1001 course focused on Social Media in the marketing world. Because this topic was so relevant to my major, this essay was easy to take an interest in – but a little bit more difficult to write.

During my writing process, I took a lot of time to take notes on what was going right in my paper, as well as what wasn’t.

When I first started my paper, it seemed like my thesis did not connect to what I stated in my conclusion.

I made a few steps to add evidence to paragraphs that needed it:

Along with these changes, I also had some minor sentencing errors, citing errors, etc. that needed to be fixed, like this one:

And then ended up with this final version of the essay:
